C&I Battery Site Survey: 12 Photos to Send Before a Quote

Use this 12-photo C&I battery site survey checklist to document access, equipment location, cable routes, clearances and project constraints.

A C&I battery quotation can survive a missing brochure. It struggles with a missing site.
“Please quote a 144kWh system” starts the conversation, but photographs and basic measurements reveal whether equipment access, cable routing, drainage and service space have been considered. They do not replace engineering; they stop the first discussion from floating in mid-air.

What a photo survey should accomplish

The survey should show where the battery may sit, how it reaches that location, what electrical equipment is nearby and what could obstruct installation or maintenance.
Do not send one heroic close-up of an empty wall. A useful set moves from wide context to specific details.

The 12-photo checklist

  1. Site entrance and delivery route.
  1. Gate width and height restrictions.
  1. Turning area for delivery equipment.
  1. Proposed equipment location from a wide angle.
  1. The same location from the opposite direction.
  1. Ground surface, slope and drainage.
  1. Nearby doors, windows, vents and work areas.
  1. Existing switchboard or transformer location.
  1. Proposed cable route.
  1. Available service access around the equipment.
  1. Rooftop or ground-mounted solar connection point, if relevant.
  1. Any obstacle the photographer thinks “probably won’t matter.”
The last photo often matters most.

Measurements to record beside the photos

  • available footprint;
  • clear access width;
  • distance to the connection point;
  • vertical restrictions;
  • cable-route length estimate;
  • local ambient temperature range;
  • flood, dust, salt or corrosive exposure;
  • vehicle or forklift movement;
  • normal working hours near the location;
  • communications availability.
Use a tape measure or a clearly documented site drawing. Do not estimate a doorway by comparing it with a person in the photograph.

Electrical and operating data still required

Pictures cannot show the load profile. A responsible proposal also needs interval load data where available, tariff details, voltage and phase, transformer information, outage objectives and the intended operating mode.
Peak management, solar self-consumption and backup support are different control problems. Decide which objective has priority and which loads are critical.

Safety and permissions

Keep cabinet doors closed during a general photo survey unless qualified personnel are following an approved procedure. Do not expose live parts for a better picture.
Remove private account numbers and personal information before sharing files. Confirm local fire, electrical, structural, permitting and utility requirements with qualified parties. This checklist is for early project definition, not final design approval.
