C&I Energy Storage Sizing FAQ: Data Buyers Need

A buyer-focused FAQ covering the site, load, tariff and operating information needed before a C&I energy storage supplier can prepare a responsible system proposal.

“Please recommend a battery for our factory” is not enough information for a responsible C&I energy storage proposal. Capacity is only one part of the decision. The supplier also needs to understand when the site uses power, what problem the project must solve, and what installation constraints can change the design.
This FAQ explains the minimum information a commercial or industrial buyer should prepare before asking for a system recommendation. It avoids made-up savings and fixed-size answers because those can only be calculated from real site data.
What is the first question a supplier should ask?
What is the project objective?
A site may want peak-demand control, greater solar self-consumption, backup for selected operations, support for a microgrid, or a combination of these. Each objective leads to a different operating strategy. A vague goal such as “reduce the bill” should be translated into a measurable target before equipment is selected.
How much load data is needed?
Provide the finest reliable interval data available, together with the date range and the meter point it represents. A short monthly bill summary may show total consumption, but it usually hides the timing and duration of demand peaks.
The supplier should know:
• interval load data and the period covered; • maximum demand and when it occurs; • weekday, weekend and seasonal operating patterns; • planned production changes or future loads; • any known power-quality or outage events.
If complete data is not available, state the gap clearly. A preliminary concept can identify what still needs to be measured, but it should not be presented as a final design.
Why are tariff details important?
Two sites with similar energy use can have very different business cases. The proposal should reference the actual tariff structure, including time-of-use periods, demand charges, export rules and any penalties that matter to the site.

Backup planning needs a named load, not just the size of the main transformer. List the processes that must continue, their running and startup demand, the acceptable interruption time, and the required operating duration.
The list may include controls, communications, safety systems, refrigeration, pumps or selected production equipment. The exact items are site-specific. Motor starting, simultaneous operation and restart sequencing should be checked by the project engineer.
What solar information is relevant?
For a solar-plus-storage project, provide the installed or proposed PV capacity, inverter information, production data if available, export limits and the desired charging strategy. The supplier also needs to know whether the battery is expected to absorb midday surplus, support evening loads or serve a backup function.
Avoid assuming that every unit of surplus solar can be stored. Connection limits, battery operating windows, conversion losses and the site’s real load profile all affect the result.
Which site constraints can change the configuration?
Useful site information includes:
• single-line diagrams and proposed point of connection; • available footprint, access route and lifting restrictions; • indoor or outdoor location and environmental conditions; • cable distances and switchgear details; • local grid-code, fire-safety and permitting requirements; • communications protocol and energy-management integration; • noise, drainage, ventilation or separation requirements; • expansion plans that may affect future capacity.

What should a useful first proposal contain?
A good preliminary proposal should state:
  1. the project objective and data period used;
  1. the loads included and excluded;
  1. the proposed operating strategy;
  1. the assumptions that still require verification;
  1. the required site and compliance checks;
  1. the next engineering inputs needed before a final quotation.
If a proposal jumps directly to a product size and savings figure without showing these inputs, ask how the conclusion was reached.

Start with interval load data, recent tariff documents, a single-line diagram, site photos, the critical-load list, solar information, operating schedule, installation location and project objective. Mark every unknown instead of estimating it silently.
